This is a research ranking of three personal password managers. Bitwarden is a nonaffiliate ordinary link. NordPass is the issued affiliate option on this publication. 1Password remains an ordinary vendor link until tracking is issued. A commission is not a reason to move someone up the table. [1][2][3]

Why Bitwarden Free is rank 1 for a personal vault
Bitwarden's help article on 21 September 2026 still describes the core Password Manager as free, including unlimited storage of logins, notes, cards, and identities, and access on any device. That is the cheapest way to stop reusing passwords without adding a bill. Free is not complete: emergency access, the integrated authenticator, vault health reports, and 5 GB attachments are Premium features. Premium is listed at $1.65 per month billed annually at $19.80. Families is listed at $3.99 per month billed annually at $47.88 for up to six users. [1][4]
We would move off Free only when a must-have is a paid feature and the paid candidate completes that job in a rehearsal. We have not imported a vault or compared autofill.
NordPass is rank 2 because the paid job is real, not because it is our affiliate

On 21 September 2026 the plans page still listed Free as a lifetime $0 plan for one user without multi-device access, Password Health, Data Breach Scanner, authenticator, or file attachments. Premium adds those paid features for one user; Family lists six user accounts. Both paid rows show a 30-day money-back guarantee. Displayed prices exclude VAT. The page loaded prices in the browser, so we keep the 16 September 2026 numeric snapshot ($37.53 first 27 months Premium display; $67.23 Family) and tell you to copy the live checkout amount. [2]
1Password is rank 3 for a household, not a solo coupon hunt
1Password's product page on 21 September 2026 listed Individual at $2.99 USD per month paid annually and $3.99 monthly, and Families at $4.49 USD per month paid annually and $5.99 monthly, with a 14-day free trial. Families adds up to five family members, unlimited shared vaults, and admin controls. Promotional pricing is for new customers subscribing on 1Password.com for the first year with annual billing; app-store billing is excluded. [5]
A family organizer can help a member regain access; 1Password recommends at least two people able to recover accounts. That is a stronger reason to shortlist Families than a first-year monthly equivalent. Our 1Password links stay ordinary until issued tracking exists. [6]
NordPass deserves a feature review, not a coupon verdict
NordPass documents Emergency Access for Premium users, including Family subscribers; the recipient may use a free account. That is a concrete capability to evaluate. It does not establish that NordPass is safer than either competitor, and this publication has not compared their security implementations. [3]
Our objection to choosing on the introductory price is practical: migrating a vault creates work immediately, while the discount is temporary. Compare the full renewal invoice and the people who need paid accounts. Reject a bundle if it adds services you will not use. A six-account plan has no value advantage for one person merely because it has more seats.
A useful evaluation takes ten invented records
Create ten fake logins covering duplicate site names, long notes, a subdomain, a changed password and shared household access. Check import fields, browser filling, phone use and export readability. This is our proposed acceptance exercise, not a test we have performed.
Review recovery instructions while access still works. Do not deliberately lock yourself out of a live vault to test them. Preserve the original manager until migration is verified. Never put real passwords, recovery codes or exported vaults into a public worksheet or support screenshot.
Compare a CSV round trip using fake records — Workflow Fieldnotes — If the candidate supports CSV export, compare only invented evaluation records with a unique key to find changed or missing fields. Do not use real passwords, recovery codes, or a live vault export for this exercise.
What would change our recommendation
We would prefer the paid candidate if the free baseline fails a necessary workflow and the paid option demonstrably completes it on your devices. We would prefer staying put if all candidates merely rearrange the same working functions. Neither this ranking nor a vendor security badge is an independent security audit.
Prices and plan tables were recaptured 21 September 2026. NordPass numeric invoices last recaptured 16 September 2026 because the 21 September plans page loaded amounts in the browser. We have not conducted an autofill benchmark, import trial, or penetration test.
Questions before you decide
Why is the affiliate option not rank 1?
Bitwarden Free still lists unlimited personal storage and any-device access at $0. NordPass is rank 2 because its paid features can close a named gap, and because we have issued tracking for it. A commission does not outrank a working free baseline.
Is this a security ranking?
No. We ranked documented jobs: personal storage cost, household recovery, and listed invoices. We have not audited encryption or compared autofill.
