Two different problems

Emergency access answers "how does someone I trust get my passwords if I cannot". Recovery answers "how do I get back in if I forget my own master password". The three products solve these with different tools, and the right plan depends on which problem you are planning for.

The three approaches side by side

Bitwarden: the most configurable

Bitwarden's emergency access lets you pick a wait time and an access level per contact. View access grants read access to all items in your individual vault, including passwords and attachments. Takeover requires the contact to create a new master password, which replaces yours and removes your two-step login methods. If you do not respond to a request, access is approved automatically after the wait time; the minimum is one day. Invitations expire after five days. [1][2]

Our view: choose view access for most people and a wait of several days, so a mistaken or malicious request gives you time to reject it. Use takeover only for someone who would need to run your accounts.

NordPass: simple and view-only

NordPass documents Emergency Access on its desktop apps, Android apps and Web Vault for Premium users. The contact can be any NordPass user, including Free. When they request access you can accept or decline within 7 days; if you do nothing, access is granted after 7 days. The contact sees your passwords and notes. [3]

For your own forgotten master password, NordPass says a reset uses the 24-symbol recovery code you were prompted to save during setup. Keep it offline, not in the vault. [4]

1Password: organizer recovery and the Emergency Kit

1Password says your account password is never known to 1Password, so no one can reset it, though you might recover access. In a family account, a member with recovery permission can restore access: the recovered person receives a new Secret Key, creates a new account password and keeps their data. 1Password recommends at least two family members who can recover accounts. [5][6]

The Emergency Kit is a PDF with your sign-in address, email and Secret Key, and space to write your account password. 1Password suggests printing it for a safe place and giving a copy to someone you trust, like a spouse or someone in your will. That printed kit is effectively your emergency access plan on an Individual account. Families was listed at $4.49 per month paid annually as a first-year promotion on 13 October 2026. [7][8]

Set it up this week

We have not triggered emergency access in any product. Read each vendor's current help page before relying on it for estate planning.

  • Pick one primary and one backup trusted person.
  • Bitwarden: invite them within the five-day invitation window and choose view access with a wait of several days.
  • NordPass: confirm Premium is active, then grant Emergency Access and tell the person what a request looks like.
  • 1Password: save and print the Emergency Kit; in Families, make sure two adults can recover accounts.
  • Store recovery codes and kits offline, separately from the vault, and note where in your will or household file.
  • Rehearse with the contact while you still have access. Do not lock yourself out to test.

Questions before you decide

Does Bitwarden Free include emergency access?

No. Bitwarden lists emergency access on Premium and paid organizations such as Families. The contact can be on a free account.

Can 1Password reset my master password?

1Password states your account password is never known to it and no one can reset it. A family member with recovery permission, or a recovery code, may restore access.
